It was the second week of July, and I was seated in the cooled lobby of a Marriott in Augusta, Ga., waiting to meet a coach for breakfast. We were both in the area, along with hundreds of others from the college basketball universe, to attend the Peach Jam, a Nike-sponsored summer camp where many of the nation’s best male prep players participated in several days of team-formatted action.
While lounging in a comfortable armchair I read a Newsweek cover story examining whether President Barack Obama was disappointing the country’s Black population by trying to adhere to a middle-of-the-road, non-preferential stance on race relations.
