The Duke Blue Devils looked like they were on their way to advancing to the Sweet 16 in blowout fashion, but Yale put a giant scare in them that stopped any premature celebreations.
Duke used a massive 18-0 run in the first half to build a 46-19 lead, appearing to have the game well in hand. All of that changed in the second half when Yale went from looking overmatched to being the aggressor.
The Bulldogs opened the second half on a 22-6 run of their own, pulling themselves within seven and cutting Duke's lead to 54-47. Yale was able to cut the deficit down to three with less than a minute to play, but Duke's Brandon Ingram hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to preserve a 71-64 win for the Devils.
Grayson Allen (29 points) and Ingram (25 points, five rebounds) carried this Duke team with limited help from anyone else. The five other players who saw action for the Blue Devils combined for just 17 points - 13 of which came from Luke Kennard.
Brandon Sherrod spearheaded Yale's comeback effort with 22 points and seven rebounds, but it ultimately wasn't enough.
Duke will now face the winner of (1) Oregon and (8) St. Joseph's in the Sweet 16 on Thursday in Anaheim, CA.
