The hours are ticking down in advance of Friday's 2015 MLB Trade Deadline, and there's plenty of intrigue to go around surrounding all 30 MLB teams -- ESPECIALLY the Detroit Tigers. With that in mind, here are three rumors you need to know:
Tigers listening to offers for David Price, Yoenis Cespedes
The Tigers are preparing to become sellers at the trade deadline, as Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports that Detroit is “rebooting.” GM Dave Dombrowski told Jason Beck of MLB.com that he’s ready to listen on all of the team’s pending free agents, meaning that the Tigers are willing to sell David Price, Yoenis Cespedes, and other pieces.
“We’re only going to make a trade if we think it makes sense for us,” said Dombrowski. “But we think [the reboot] gives us a chance to restock our club.”
Price now enters the market as one of the top available pitchers (along with Philadelphia's Cole Hamels), and Cespedes would provide a huge boost to a team that needs a bat. However, they're not the only names available.
Closer Joakim Soria, outfielder Rajai Davis, and catcher Alex Avila can also be had, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
Deal with Cubs imminent?
The Chicago Cubs haven't covered up their desire to land a front-line starting pitcher before the deadline, and have been in discussions with the Tigers about a few players during the past few weeks, though most of their attention has been given to Price.
Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago wrote that the Cubs have been "like sharks in a fish tank, Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer were among the first to inquire about Price. Earlier in the week the Tigers, for the first time in a decade, decided to be sellers ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, according to a USA Today report."
Price has already expressed interest in joining the Cubs as a free agent this offseason, which could detract other suitors from making a big bid to get him as a rental.
Astros a possible landing spot for Price?
The Astros are another team that expressed interest in Price earlier in the month, but moved on to Scott Kazmir when learning Price wasn't available at the time. Houston has also been actively pursuing Cole Hamels, clearly showing their desire to add another ace to their staff. Now that Price is available, expect them to try to make a deal for him again.
