Last season’s trade deadline came and went, and Matthew Boyd stayed put.
Now, as the offseason enters its final month, it appears winter, too, will pass with Boyd still atop the Detroit Tigers’ starting rotation.
“I’m not out there trying to sell Matt Boyd,” general manager Al Avila said at the winter meetings in San Diego earlier this month. “We need Matt Boyd right now to be a good team.”
But the Tigers, who went 47-114 last season and finished with the worst record in MLB, will not likely be successful in 2020. And with the top free agent starters already off the board, Boyd could represent an attractive fall-back option for contending teams who need to bolster their rotations.
