Why are Detroit Tigers still using struggling hitters like Victor Martinez?

TORONTO — Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire acknowledged Sunday morning that he’s glad to move on from the month of June.

He has tried to keep things loose, with the team riding a season-high 11-game losing streak.

And in the midst of the skid, several players, including veteran designated hitter Victor Martinez, outfielder JaCoby Jones and catcher James McCann, struggled mightily in the past month.

Gardenhire said he saw John Hicks on a trainer’s table and jokingly asked him if he’d broken his neck swinging at sliders in Saturday’s 4-3 loss to the Blue Jays.
