As the trading month begins, it’s worth remembering that today also marks the 70th anniversary of the Tigers’ biggest midseason addition ever. On July 1, 1945, Hank Greenberg returned from World War II — just over two weeks after being officially discharged — and homered in his first game back to help beat the Philadelphia A’s at Briggs Stadium. After four years serving his country, Greenberg batted .311 with 13 homers, 60 RBIs and a .948 OPS in 78 games, and the Tigers went on to win the World Series.
As for tonight, Rajai Davis gets the matchup start in center against A.
