To find stories about Lou Whitaker is to find a needle in a haystack.
Perhaps that is the reason Whitaker — one of the better second basemen in major league history and who played his entire career with the Detroit Tigers — only lasted one year on the Baseball Writers’ Association of America Hall of Fame ballot.
Perhaps it was Whitaker’s quiet personality and calm demeanor. The way he played baseball effortlessly, as if he weren’t trying, which made some former teammates wonder how much more could be in the tank.
