DETROIT -- In his 1,757th career game, Victor Martinez accomplished something he'd never done before.
The Detroit Tigers designated hitter reached on a bunt single Monday, thwarting the shift that is used routinely against him.
Leading off the fifth inning against Cleveland Indians starter Trevor Bauer, Martinez was faced with a normal alignment when he bats left-handed. Three infielders were stacked up on the right side; only one was on the left side, far from the third base line.
Martinez laid down a perfect bunt to the third base side and ran hard to first. There was no need, as the Indians didn't even attempt a throw.
