LAKELAND, Fla. -- Veteran catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has returned to the Detroit Tigers on a minor-league contract, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
Saltalamacchia was spotted by reporters at Tiger Town Friday morning. The team did not immediately confirm his signing.
The 32-year-old was the Tigers backup catcher in 2016. This year he's more likely to compete for a spot in Triple-A Toledo.
John Hicks is expected to back up starting catcher James McCann for the Tigers this season. Youngster Grayson Greiner is also on the 40-man roster and will probably start the season in Toledo or Double-A Erie.
