Unlikely hero gives Detroit Tigers 2-1 win over Yankees: Observations

NEW YORK — The Detroit Tigers will head home with a winning record.

After showing little-to-no life offensively during the first week of the regular season, the Tigers wrapped up a series win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday afternoon in the most unlikely of ways.

Gordon Beckham, the veteran utilityman who was one of the final additions to the Opening Day roster, hit his first home run since 2016 to give the Tigers a 2-1 win.

Or, perhaps, the team won in the likeliest of ways: Tallying only three hits, they were boosted by another strong performance from left-hander Matthew Boyd, who set a career-high with 13 strikeouts.
