Trepid Victor Martinez lays down first bunt for a hit vs. Indians' shift

Victor Martinez’s heart was beating fast.

“Boom, boom, boom,” was the way he described it.

Cleveland Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer went into his windup to start the bottom of the fifth inning on Monday night and Martinez, at this moment, decided it was time.

The Detroit Tigers designated hitter – the slowest man in baseball – was going to drop down a bunt.

“I wasn’t really confident,” he admitted.

He saw third baseman Jose Ramirez shifting him near the shortstop position, saw a wide open field down the third base line and told himself, “If I put it there, I’ll be safe.
