This is part of an occasional series looking back on the 1968 World Series champion Detroit Tigers.
The stories are 50 years old, but former Detroit Tiger Tom Matchick cracks up like he's sharing them for the first time.
"(John) Hiller always tells the story about the day when he was sitting on the bench, and he asked Gates (Brown) if he graduated from high school," Matchick said. "Gates said, 'Well, yeah, I did.' Hiller asked him what he took in high school.
"Gates said, 'I took some arithmetic, history, some wheel covers, hubcaps, some stereos.
