Tigers thin camp roster by cutting 5 pitchers

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers made their first significant round of cuts this spring, optioning five pitchers to minor-league camp.

Right-handers Artie Lewicki and Zac Reininger were formally optioned to Triple-A Toledo; right-handers Gerson Moreno and Spencer Turnbull to Double-A Erie; and left-hander Gregory Soto to Class A (Advanced) Lakeland.

All five pitchers remain on the 40-man roster.

The cuts leave 52 players in camp and should make it easier for the Tigers to dole out innings in the final weeks of camp.
