Tigers tab tall power pitcher with No. 9 pick

DETROIT -- For the second straight year, the Tigers went the high school pitcher route with their top Draft pick. This time, they selected big high school right-hander Matt Manning with the ninth overall pick.

Manning, a two-sport standout at Sheldon High School in Sacramento, Calif., is the son of former NBA player Rich Manning. He's a late convert to pitching, but he has an arsenal that fits his 6-foot-6 frame, boasting a 96-97 mph fastball to go with a power curve and a changeup.

MLB.com ranked Manning as the 11th-best prospect heading into the Draft, up from just outside the top 20 earlier.
