Tigers sniff around but decide to stay the course

Detroit – Prudence prevailed.

Tigers general manager Al Avila did at the trade deadline exactly what he suggested all along that he might do – nothing.

Well, that’s not exactly true. He worked the phones right up until the 4 p.m. deadline. The Tigers were in on three starting pitchers – Oakland’s Rich Hill, Philadelphia’s Jeremy Hellickson and Los Angeles Angels’ Hector Santiago.

But in the end, as Avila predicted, to acquire those players would have meant trading one or more of the club’s four top prospects – three of whom are working presently at the Major League level (pitchers Michael Fulmer, Daniel Norris and Matt Boyd).
