LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers reassigned veteran catcher Brayan Pena to minor-league camp on Friday, leaving 36 players (and four catchers) in Major League camp.
Pena, 36, has played 12 big-league seasons for five teams, including the Tigers in 2013. The native of Cuba was in camp to provide depth at catcher while mentoring pitchers. He's likely making one of his last stops as a player before transitioning into a coaching role.
Two other veteran catchers -- Derek Norris and Jarrod Saltalamacchia -- remain in camp. It's unlikely that the Tigers will have a spot for all three veterans in the minor leagues.
