DETROIT -- Victor Martinez tried to fight back the tears, but eventually was so overcome by emotion that he had to pause before he could muster a few words of thanks.
Surrounded by teammates, Martinez was saluted by the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night before playing in the final game of his 16-year career.
"From the bottom of my heart," Martinez said, "thank you for being behind us all these years, supporting my teammates, supporting myself. Thank you very much."
The emotions will continue into the game. Martinez is starting at first base for the first time since June 1, 2016.
