Detroit – If you can’t beat him, hire him.
The Detroit Tigers Friday named former Minnesota Twins skipper Ron Gardenhire the 38th manager in club history. He was signed to a three-year deal to replace Brad Ausmus.
Gardenhire was introduced at a press conference at Comerica Park on Friday. He was joined by general manager Al Avila and Chris Ilitch, president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings.
“I'm honored,” Gardenhire said during the press conference. “It's something that's very special to me, this Central Division. I've battled against this team for a long time. Jim Leyland and I are good buddies.
