MINNEAPOLIS -- The Detroit Tigers could use another lefty reliever in Triple-A Toledo and eventually, perhaps, with the big-league club.
When it became clear that one-time prospect Jairo Labourt wouldn't fill the role, the Tigers added a veteran from outside the organization.
The Tigers formally released Labourt, 24, on Monday from extended spring training, where he had been preparing for an eventual return to Toledo or Double-A Erie. They signed Kevin Chapman, 30, who had been pitching for a team in the Atlantic League, an independent league outside of affiliated baseball.
