Tigers prospect will undergo Tommy John surgery, miss 2018 season

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Detroit Tigers prospect Bryan Garcia will under Tommy John surgery on Thursday after he was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.

Dr. James Andrews will perform the procedure, which will sideline Garcia for all of 2018.

A sixth-round pick out of the University of Miami in 2016, Garcia soared up the Tigers' system, beginning last season at Class A West Michigan and ending it at Triple-A Toledo. The right-hander went 5-3 with a 2.13 ERA, striking out 78 in 55 innings over four levels.

Garcia, 22, was expected to be one of the Mud Hens' top relievers in 2018 and was almost certain to end up in Detroit at some point this year.
