Tigers outslug Pirates in failing arms race, 13-10

Pittsburgh — They have a good five months remaining in their 2018 regular season. And never perhaps will the Tigers be more relieved to have won a game than they were after taking Wednesday’s doubleheader opener against the Pirates, 13-10, at PNC Park.

The high-fives came mostly because pitching was so gosh-awful for both teams that only victory would salvage this exercise in baseball non-artistry.

The two teams combined for 34 base hits, 20 of them by Detroit, in a game that was more of an ordeal that lasted 3 hours, 51 minutes.

The Tigers had huge innings from a stream of sluggers: Jeimer Candelario, with a home run, double, single, and five runs scored.
