Detroit – Interesting situation arose in the eighth inning of the Detroit Tigers’ 2-1 win over the Red Sox Monday.
Lefty Justin Wilson, the Tigers’ eighth-inning set-up man, threw 24 pitches in a scoreless eighth to keep the game tied 1-1. The Boston Red Sox had lefty Mitch Moreland and switch-hitting Pablo Sandoval, who is vastly better hitting left-handed, coming up in the ninth.
After the game, after the Tigers had scored in the bottom of the eighth to render the situation moot, manager Brad Ausmus said closer Francisco Rodriguez was going to pitch the ninth, even if the game was still tied.
