Pitcher Matt Manning, the Detroit Tigers No. 1 draft pick in 2016, was promoted Wednesday from West Michigan to high Class-A Lakeland.
The 20-year-old Manning was 3-3 with a 3.40 ERA in 11 starts this season with the Whitecaps. He was coming off a strong performance Tuesday when he allowed one run in seven innings in a 10-3 victory against South Bend. He struck out eight, walked none and scattered eight singles.
In 55 2/3 innings this season, he has allowed 47 hits, struck out 76 and walked 28.
Manning, who learned of the promotion Wednesday, said he was prepared for the advancement.
