Tigers' Miguel Cabrera has 2 herniated disks; treatment plan undetermined

DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera has two herniated disks in his back but might still play again this season, manager Brad Ausmus said.

Cabrera underwent an MRI on Sunday after leaving Saturday's game in the first inning with lower back pain.

Ausmus said the MRI showed two herniated disks in Cabrera's vertebrae, which the Mayo Clinic says can cause pain by irritating or inflaming the spinal nerve root.

Ausmus said Cabrera's treatment plan is still being determined, but he doesn't believe surgery is one of the options under consideration.

Cabrera asked to accompany the team on its final road trip of the season.
