DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers pitcher Michael Fulmer is likely to undergo season-ending surgery this week to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.
Manager Ron Gardenhire said Fulmer has an appointment with orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. If Andrews confirms the initial diagnosis, Fulmer will undergo surgery on Thursday.
The Mayo Clinic describes a torn meniscus as one of the most common knee injuries. The meniscus is one of two pieces of cartilage that act as a cushion where shin bone meets the thigh bone.
Gardenhire said the "plan" is for Fulmer to be ready for spring training in February.
