DETROIT -- Michael Fulmer's disappointing 2018 season has likely come to an end after an MRI revealed damage to the cartilage in his knee, manager Ron Gardenhire said.
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews will review the MRI and give a second opinion. Until then, Gardenhire avoided calling it a "meniscus tear" and said he didn't want to speculate about the possibility of surgery. But he acknowledged that Fulmer's season was almost certainly over.
The Detroit Tigers right-hander will finish 3-12 with a 4.69 ERA in 132 1/3 innings. He has 110 strikeouts and 46 walks.
"Let the doctors take care of him and hopefully we see him in spring training ready to go and try this again," Gardenhire said.
