Tigers' Matthew Boyd ejected after hitting Phillies batter

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- A bean-ball war in spring training?

It didn't quite amount to that, but Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matthew Boyd was ejected in the fifth inning Thursday after hitting Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera.

Boyd threw one pitch that went over Herrera's head and then another that hit him in the same at-bat. He was immediately ejected by home plate umpire Tom Hallion.

Boyd expressed disbelief and manager Ron Gardenhire ran out to argue furiously.

Boyd says he lost grip on pitch that flew over Herrera's head because he saw Herrera bailing out of box mid-delivery.
