Tigers’ Matthew Boyd brilliant in taming Twins

Detroit – The no-hitter wasn’t going to happen – at least not for Matthew Boyd alone.

As the Detroit Tigers left-hander’s pitch count climbed over 90 in the sixth inning, even before Robbie Grossman blooped a single to left for the first Minnesota Twins’ hit, manager Brad Ausmus was already plotting his bullpen strategy.

“The no-hitter was going to be out of reach regardless because of the pitch count,” Ausmus said after the Tigers held on Tuesday for a 2-1 win, their fourth in five games. “He certainly wasn't going to get nine innings. I'm sure everyone would have second-guessed it, but he was going to be done.
