DETROIT -- The search for the 39th manager in Detroit Tigers history is effectively under way.
It might take a while to complete.
Teams are encouraged to wait until after the World Series to name a new manager unless they have permission from the league office. And if the Tigers have a sought-after candidate still working until the end, they might be happy to wait until Nov. 2.
Tigers general manager Al Avila didn't reveal much about his plans for the search, but he did say this: It's not going to be quick.
"We're going to do a lot of thorough background work and we'll have a good list of names that we'll whittle down little by little," he said.
