DETROIT -- Miguel Cabrera will get the start at designated hitter on Friday night after the regular DH, Victor Martinez, was placed on the disabled list with an irregular heartbeat.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said he had to convince Cabrera to take the assignment. "Why can't Alex DH?" he asked, referring to Alex Avila, who is playing first base.
Ausmus said he'd like to use the now-open DH spot to get Cabrera and J.D. Martinez a few days off their feet.
Cabrera has added a hip flexor to his ongoing back and groin problems, but Ausmus said a DL trip has not been considered or discussed.
