LAKELAND, Fla. -- Young left-hander Jairo Labourt, designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers last week, has been claimed on waivers by the Cincinnati Reds.
The Tigers removed Labourt from the 40-man roster to make room for veteran free-agent signee Francisco Liriano.
If Labourt had gone through waivers unclaimed, the Tigers could have outrighted him to the minor leagues. Instead, he joins the Reds' 40-man roster and will head to Arizona for their spring training camp.
Labourt, who turns 24 next week, was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in the David Price trade in 2015.
