SEATTLE -- Justin Verlander has retired all 15 batters he's faced through five innings Wednesday night at Safeco Field.
Verlander has recorded nine strikeouts. Four batters have been retired on fly-outs, two on ground-outs.
Ben Gamel, Kyle Seager and Danny Valencia have all struck out twice.
The Detroit Tigers, who are trying to snap a four-game losing streak, lead the Seattle Mariners 2-0 in the top of the sixth.
Verlander has thrown two no-hitters in his career. The first was 10 years ago this month, on June 12, 2007, at Comerica Park against the Milwaukee Brewers.
