But after he allowed five runs in less than an inning on Wednesday night at Comerica Park, there were no subtleties in his message: "I have to do my job and I didn't do it," he said.
After dominating every minor-league level, the 21-year-old has had a difficult rookie season in the big leagues.
He's allowed 19 earned runs on 24 hits in 13 1/3 innings, walking five and striking out 11 in three stints with the Tigers.
