LAKELAND, Fla. - The timing could have been worse, but the news out of Charlotte, N.C., on Friday was not great for the Detroit Tigers.
J.D. Martinez is expected to miss three to four weeks with a sprain of the Lisfranc ligament in his right foot, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said following Friday afternoon's spring-training game against the Atlanta Braves.
It's not a Lisfranc ligament rupture, meaning surgery will not be required. The injury just needs time to heal, Ausmus said.
Martinez will be in a cast for seven to 10 days, according to Ausmus. After the cast is off, the foot can be re-tested, at which point the Tigers will have a better idea how long Martinez will be out.
