LAKELAND, Fla. -- Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila, back in Florida after attending services for late team owner Mike Ilitch, remembered his boss as a tough competitor who also cared for his employees and had a good sense of humor.
"He was a tough guy and a tough competitor that wanted to win, but he brought humor to everyday life," Avila said Thursday night.
