DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers infielder Dixon Machado passed through waivers unclaimed and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Toledo, the team announced Sunday.
Machado was designated for assignment on Wednesday night after losing his job at second base to the hot-hitting Niko Goodrum.
None of the league's 29 other teams put in a claim for him while he was on waivers. Machado had the right to elect free agency after clearing waivers, but instead accepted an assignment to the Mud Hens.
Machado, a 26-year-old native of Venezuela, has been in the Tigers system for almost a decade and spent the last two seasons with the big-league club.
