The Detroit Tigers filled out their 40-man roster by claiming the contract of right-handed pitcher Johnny Barbato on waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Barbato, 25, was designated for assignment by the Pirates last week. He went 0-1 with a 4.08 ERA in 2017, striking out 23 and walking 18 in 28 2/3 innings. He struck out 41 in 39 innings at the Triple-A level.
The Miami native was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in the sixth round in 2010 and was traded to the New York Yankees after the 2014 season.
The Yankees traded him to the Pirates last April.
