Tigers catcher James McCann nears Gold Glove, still seeks improvement

LAKELAND, Fla. – James McCann made his greatest impact on defense for the Detroit Tigers last season.

McCann, who will begin spring training Tuesday when pitchers and catchers conduct their first workout, blossomed into a finalist for the American League Gold Glove Award last year, improving defensively after not committing an error in 2015.

He’s working to get better again heading into this season, particularly on framing pitches in the lower part of the strike zone.

“It’s all about presentation,” McCann said today. “About what the umpire sees and I think there’s a few things that I can adjust to get more strike calls.
