DETROIT -- Valuing a fresh arm in the bullpen this weekend more than another bat on the bench, the Detroit Tigers are replacing designated hitter Victor Martinez with a pitcher.
Right-hander Buck Farmer will join the Tigers on Friday when Martinez is placed on the paternity list, manager Brad Ausmus said.

Martinez hit a line-drive, three-run home run in the third inning to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 win.
Farmer, 26, has made at least one appearance for the Tigers in each of the last three seasons.
