DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers right-handed pitcher Artie Lewicki will undergo Tommy John surgery next week, likely sidelining him for all of 2019.
Lewicki, 26, went on the disabled list last week after feeling discomfort in his elbow. After continuing to feel pain, he flew New York to consult with Dr. Christopher Ahmad.
Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said Lewicki's elbow ligament was loose and would eventually snap with continued pitching. After weighing the options, Lewicki opted for surgery.
It's the second Tommy John surgery for Lewicki, who also underwent the procedure after his 2012 season at the University of Virginia.
