San Diego – The Tigers did, in fact, get their catcher.
On Thursday they agreed to a one-year, $4 million deal with former Yankees catcher Austin Romine, the brother of former Tigers utility man Andrew Romine.
Romine, 31, played parts of eight seasons with the Yankees and has been their primary back-up the last three. He hit .281 in 72 games last year, with a .310 on-base percentage and .748 OPS, with eight home runs and 35 RBIs.
He’s been a solid defensive catcher, posting a plus-6 defensive runs save in 2018 and a plus-1 last year, when he threw out 10 of 33 base runners.
