DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers activated right-handed reliever Johnny Barbato from the 10-day disabled list on Thursday and then optioned him to Triple-A Toledo.
Barbato was considered a candidate for a spot on the Opening Day roster before being sidelined with a forearm injury late in camp.
The 25-year-old was claimed on waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates in January. He went 0-1 with a 4.08 ERA for the Pirates in 2017, striking out 23 and walking 18 in 28 2/3 innings. He struck out 41 in 39 innings at the Triple-A level.
The Miami native was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in the sixth round in 2010 and was traded to the New York Yankees after the 2014 season.
