Brad Ausmus thought Randy Wolf would compete.
"Simple as that," he said this afternoon, before the veteran left-hander made his first major league start in over a year.
And Wolf competed. On his 39th birthday, he gave the Tigers a big effort, throwing seven innings. But for the second night in a row, their offense couldn't compete with Rangers pitching as they lost, 5-3, at Comerica Park.
Most of the game's scoring came in the third inning, when the Rangers hit single after single against Wolf – five of them – and scored four runs.
Prince Fielder, Adrian Beltre and Mike Napoli each had RBI singles.
