Spring standouts Sandy Baez, Arcenio Leon took different paths to Tigers

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Being able to throw in the upper-90s might arch an eyebrow or two, but it's not enough to stand out in a Major League camp.

But throw 97 mph with excellent command and poise on the mound? Do that and you'll get noticed.

Arcenio Leon, a 30-year-old Venezuelan, spent all of 2016 in the Mexican League because he didn't have a job offer from a Major League organization. Sandy Baez, a 23-year-old from the Dominican Republic, was just promoted to the Detroit Tigers 40-man roster and hasn't pitched above Class A West Michigan.
