A couple hours before Boston eliminated the Detroit Tigers from the 2013 American League Championship Series in Game 6, Dave Dombrowski and I shared a couple seats in the third base stands at Fenway Park. The former Tigers general manager wasn’t happy with a column I wrote the previous day that chastised Mike Ilitch for irresponsibly overpaying for Prince Fielder in January, 2012. Leaving them with an expensive and potentially unproductive albatross around their necks for another seven years when the franchise was staring at an unavoidable rebuild.
Wasn’t anyone within the upper reaches of the Tigers’ executive hierarchy capable of telling their terminally generous boss “You might want to re-think this free agent offer, Mr.
