One of the Detroit Tigers’ remaining arbitration-eligible quartet avoided a possible square-off Friday when Shane Greene agreed on a 2018 contract that will pay the Tigers’ bullpen closer $1.95 million.
The figure was revealed by a Tigers source connected with the negotiations who requested anonymity.
Jose Iglesias, Nick Castellanos, and reliever Alex Wilson failed to settle on new contracts ahead of Friday’s 1 p.m. deadline for arbitration-eligible players to reach accord with their teams.
The deadline does not preclude players and their club from securing a new contract ahead of a February arbitration hearing.
Greene was paid $550,600 in 2017 as he moved into the closer’s role and found comfort, as well as prowess, in shutting down ninth innings with his flaming fastball-slider combination.
