LAKELAND, Fla. -- Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire took a bus trip to Dunedin on Sunday morning rather than stay with the rest of the squad in Lakeland.
Why? In part, because he wanted to keep the tabs on the youngsters, who made up the bulk of the split-squad being sent on the road.
"I always travel. Anytime there's a split-squad, I'll travel," Gardenhire said. "It's just feels like I should be doing it."
By hitting the road, Gardenhire missed the Tigers debut of 2017 first-round draft pick Alex Faedo, who pitched a scoreless inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
