Ron Gardenhire, Detroit Tigers (finally) able to celebrate first 2018 win

This time, the Detroit Tigers did not celebrate.

They did not pour out of the dugout or the bullpen, hands high with emotion after a win. No, after getting robbed of their first victory of the season a few days earlier against the Pirates, they know better.

So when a bang-bang play at first base nearly ended Monday afternoon’s game against the Royals with a groundball double play, the fielders – led by first baseman Miguel Cabrera – took a more cautious approach.

Like Opening Day, replay review overturned the call on the field. Unlike Opening Day, it was the right call: Kansas City outfielder Paulo Orlando was safe.
