Pirates sweep Tigers, who start season 0-3 for first time in 10 years

DETROIT -- For one inning, it looked like moving Buck Farmer to the bullpen was a brilliant idea.

It still might be. But his second inning didn't go so smoothly.

After striking out the side in the fourth, Farmer surrendered five runs on five hits in the fifth inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers 8-6 on Sunday night at Comerica Park.

The Pirates (3-0) swept Sunday's doubleheader and the opening weekend series against the Tigers, who have started the season 0-3 for the first time since 2008.

Tigers starter Ryan Carpenter, called up from Triple-A Toledo to make a spot start, pitched two scoreless innings before giving up a pair of home runs in the third.
