DETROIT -- No umpires at Comerica Park were wearing wrist wristbands on Sunday, a day after their union said they were protesting escalating "verbal attacks."
The World Umpires Association said the comments by Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler that "publicly and harshly impugned the character and integrity" of umpire Angel Hernandez were a catalyst for the protest.
"It's 'open season' on umpires and that's bad for the game," the union said in its statement.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus reacted angrily to the protest, which he only learned about after Saturday's game was over.
